Project Update

The last few months have been extremely frustrating for us. We have been dealing with several issues which are government-related that have currently put our project on hold. We have been speaking with various Alberta Government officials, including Ministers and Deputy Ministers, and Managers from various government agencies, to try to resolve these issues. We have contacted MLAs from various constituencies, Mayors from nearby cities and towns, and representatives from the County of Yellowhead who all confirm their support and belief in the viability of the Cougar Rock project.

All of our efforts until now have been directed towards doing whatever is required to move this project forward, so that construction could commence as soon as possible. To date we have been unable to determine exactly what is needed by various government agencies so that we can move forward. We have also been frustrated by the lack of cooperation, and disappointed by the apparent lack of support, from the parties involved.

We are hoping that over the next few weeks a spirit of cooperation can be achieved, issues will be resolved, and the Cougar Rock project will be able to proceed. Failing that, we may be forced to enlist the aid of the Alberta Court system to settle matters.

We will update this page from time to time as events occur, hopefully with a positive outcome for all involved.

Latest News

As was reported in the news media recently, on April 7, 2010 we received a letter from the Alberta Government's Sustainable Resources Division stating that our current land leases for the Cougar Rock project had been cancelled. We have been given six months to appeal this decision and will be doing everything we can to get this project, which has been in the works for over 12 years, back on track. We have heard that many more land leases in the area were also cancelled recently, some of which had been in place for over 30 years! There is obviously something going on here, and we encourage the public to investigate it further. Perhaps it has to do with the announcement of a new Thermal Coal mine being developed in the area?

Note: We will be updating our Members' Only Update page with more specific details when we can.

Area Update

As happens every year, visitors from Alberta and around the world are planning their vacations to the Jasper area to take advantage of all the activities that are available. Now that summer is here, the choices are endless. And with the economy turning around, the tourist population is booming this year. But with the closure of several campgrounds in the area this summer, space will be at a premium.
